Wondering if it's time to leave ???

No I'm not talking about the ministry, I'm talking about facebook. It's great for keeping in touch, but it's just getting TOO BIG and it seems for a lot people it is also becoming an addiction!

If 48% of 18-30 year olds are checking facebook as soon as they get up in the morning and if 48% of Christians (young adults) are doing the same - how many of them are still making time for God before the day begins? So, am I brave enough to delete my account? I'm not there yet but I'm closer than I ever was before.

I have been really struggling with these things. I hate Facebook for all its trivia and time wasting and cancelled my personal account but appreciate some of its benefits. That is my reason for testing it for the Church and 2hearts. I am still to be convinced though. Appreciate you raising this. If I was overseas away from family like you, I think I might understand your dilemma even more.

Let's pray for guidance on all aspects of how we use social media and the web for His glory.

  2. Gary,
The large number of young people that use fb is exactly the reason why I chose to join. It was a decision to go where people are "gathering", whether it be those in church, younger (extended) family members, or in a broader context. Resisting membership (which I had done), kept me from a source of contact and information.

    In His Grace,
    David

  3. Thanks David and David for your contributions, I really appreciate you taking the time to leave the comments.
There are good reasons for staying and good reasons for leaving. Everyone has to weigh them up in his/her own situation. I have now left. Claudia is still on and she can let me know about the things I wouldn't want to miss.
However I am unhappy that facebook does not allow me to delete my account but only "deactivate" it. If I login once, the account is reactivated automatically. The fact that I do not have the option to delete all the information they hold on me - is concerning.

  5. Thanks Andrew for the very useful advice:
I had to temporarily reactivate my account for the link to work. Then I got the following message:
If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, we can take care of this for you. Keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added. If you would like your account deleted, then click "Submit".

I then had to enter my password and the words in the boxes. The next message was:

Your account has been deactivated from the site and will be permanently deleted within 14 days. If you log into your account within the next 14 days, you will have the option to cancel your request.

"permanently deleted" should mean that they do not keep any of the information However I doubt that is true.

    Thanks for the tip!
